The elimination of the focal depth cue relieves the VAC problem partially, making the Maxwellian display attractive. Since the effective eye pupil for the images is reduced to a spot, the depth of field is enlarged so that the image looks always focused regardless of the actual focal length of the eye lens. In Maxwellian configuration, the light from the display panel is focused at a spot in the eye pupil plane and projected on the eye retina. Maxwellian NED is one possible approach that alleviates the VAC problem.
This discrepancy makes it hard to achieve realistic optical matching of virtual images with real environment in AR applications and is known to be a cause of many side effects including eye fatigue and perceived resolution reduction. While the perceived distance, or vergence distance, varies according to the binocular disparity of the contents, the focal distance of individual eye, or accommodation distance, is fixed at the physical image plane of the display panel. In optical experiment, it has been confirmed that the proposed system can present always-focused images with large depth of field and three-dimensional images at different distances with shallow depth of field at the same time without any time-multiplexing. For depth of field control and eyebox steering, computer generated holograms of three-dimensional objects are synthesized with different ranges of angular spectrum. For optical see-through capability and eyebox duplication, a holographic optical element is used as an optical combiner where it functions as multiplexed tilted concave mirrors forming multiple copies of the eyebox. We propose an optical see-through holographic near-eye-display that can control the depth of field of individual virtual three-dimensional image and replicate the eyebox with dynamic steering.
